Build of the week: Lair of Grievous

Features
By James Davenport published 29 August 2016

It's missing a many-mandibled Star Wars droid, but this PC still feels like a home. A robot home.

James is stuck in an endless loop, playing the Dark Souls games on repeat until Elden Ring and Silksong set him free. He's a truffle pig for indie horror and weird FPS games too, seeking out games that actively hurt to play. Otherwise he's wandering Austin, identifying mushrooms and doodling grackles.

I've never seen the Star Wars: Clone Wars TV series, which this week's build is based on, but I've seen Revenge of the Sith and know enough about General Grievous. He's a robot jerk with four arms and the lightsabers to match and is probably the only good-ish memory I have of that movie. But supposedly, the show is pretty good! If that means more angsty robot action, I'm all for it.

Modder Andrew McIntosh drew inspiration from Season One, Episode 10 of the series, in which we get an inside look at Grievous' base of operations. Unsurprisingly, the robot has a refined sense for interior decoration and it's reflected nicely in McIntosh's design. Most of all, I like that it just looks like a very grumpy case. Cheer up, little guy.

If you ask me, the finest detail isn't the gorgeous grinning exterior, but the inclusion of four GTX 760s running in SLI. Let that sink in for a minute. Four GPUs. A four-armed robot. Heh. They may not be top of the line, but the sacrifice in power is worth it for the concept.
